FILM REPORT 1

THP 261 / ENG 210

DUE: MARCH 6

Find and watch any film.  It can be in a movie theater, on tape or DVD, on TV (though you should not pick one that has been heavily edited).  The film should preferably be one that you are not very familiar with.  If you are slightly familiar with it, but have not seen it in a while, that is okay, too.  It should NOT be one of your all-time favorite movies.

Analyze the film, much in the way we analyzed the screenplay for “And You Act Like One, Too.”  What worked?  Why didn’t work?  Why?  How does the film relate to the things we’ve read about or discussed in class?

In your essay, please answer the following questions:

bullet

What did the film do to catch your attention at the beginning?  How long did it take for some major event to grab your attention?

bullet

When was the major conflict of the film first revealed?

bullet

What were the two major plot points?  When did they happen in the film?

DO NOT:  Write a film summary.  Refer to specific parts if necessary, but do not summarize.

DO NOT:  Analyze the meaning of the film.  This paper is about looking at how the film works.  If that meaning relates to the workings of the film, include it.  If it doesn’t, don’t.

The paper should be as long as it needs to be to deal with the issues thoroughly.  My guess is that it should be no less than three pages.

You will be graded on the following:

bullet

How thoroughly and thoughtfully does the paper tackle the issues we have been discussing in class (and the ones bulleted above)?

bullet

Is the paper organized?
bullet

Does it move logically from one point to the next, as opposed to have fragmented, scattered thoughts?

bullet

Is it concise?

bullet

Is it repetitive?

bullet

Is it clear?

bullet

Is the grammar and punctuation correct?  Please reread your paper for these issues before turning it in.
